How Many Skincare Products Do You Really Need? | Coffee Chats with Cathy
Be honest.
Have you ever opened your bathroom cupboard and thought…
“Why on earth do I have all this?” 😂
A cleanser you bought because someone recommended it.
A serum that was apparently going to change your life.
Three moisturisers, two exfoliators, an eye cream you keep forgetting to use, and that mysterious little bottle you’re no longer quite sure what it does.
Sound familiar?
Welcome to skincare in 2026.
We are constantly being shown the next product we supposedly need. And before we know it, skincare has gone from a simple daily habit to something requiring a spreadsheet and possibly a chemistry degree.
But here's something I tell people all the time:
More products don't automatically mean better skin.
Your skin doesn't care how impressive your bathroom shelf looks.
It cares about what you're using, why you're using it and whether you're using it consistently.
For many people, a good routine can start very simply:
💗 Cleanse to remove dirt, makeup, sunscreen and excess oil.
💗 Moisturise to support hydration and your skin barrier.
💗 Protect with sunscreen during the day.
Then we can look at your individual concerns.
Maybe that's dryness.
Maybe it's breakouts.
Pigmentation.
Sensitivity.
Fine lines.
Or perhaps your skin has changed and the products you've used for years suddenly don't seem to be doing the job anymore.
That's when we add products with a purpose.
Not because TikTok told us to.
Not because there's a shiny new jar.
And definitely not because somebody said, “Every woman over 50 needs this!”
Your skin didn't read that memo. 😉
☕ Here's my challenge for you this week...
Go and look at your skincare cupboard.
Pick up each product and ask yourself:
What does this actually do for my skin?
If you don't know the answer, that's where we start.
Because skincare shouldn't leave you confused, overwhelmed or feeling as though you need to spend a fortune.
It should begin with four simple questions:
What concerns you the most?
What products have you tried?
How much time do you have?
What's your budget?
That's a conversation.
Not a sales pitch.
And in my book, that's exactly how skincare should begin.
So tell me in the comments...

Come on. No cheating.
I'll bring the coffee. ☕😂
