Cathy's Coffee Chat explores sensitive skin, skin barrier health and how gentle skincare routines can help care for reactive and sensitised skin.

I've got sensitive skin . . . so I can't use anything.

Pop the kettle on...

Because today I want to talk about a sentence I hear all the time.

"I can't use skincare. My skin is too sensitive."

And usually, it's followed by a story.

"Everything makes me red."

"Products sting."

"I've tried so many things that I've given up."

"I'm better off putting nothing on it."

And you know what?

If your skin has reacted badly before, I completely understand why you'd be nervous about trying something new.

But here's my question...

Is your skin really sensitive to everything?

Or is it trying to tell you something?

Your Skin Has a Barrier for a Reason

Think of your skin barrier as your body's little security guard.

Its job is to help keep the good stuff in and the not-so-good stuff out.

But when that barrier becomes compromised, your skin can start behaving very differently.

Suddenly products you've used before may sting.

Your skin might feel tight after cleansing.

You may notice redness, dryness, flaking or itching.

And sometimes you'll find yourself standing in the bathroom thinking...

“What on earth happened to my skin?”

That's when many people decide:

"Right. I'm not putting ANYTHING on it!"

Fair enough.

But sometimes avoiding skincare altogether isn't the answer.

Sometimes your skin isn't asking you to abandon it.

It's asking you to treat it differently.

Sensitive Skin Doesn't Need Punishment

This is where I think we sometimes get skincare backwards.

If our skin isn't behaving, we attack it.

More scrubbing.

More exfoliating.

More treatments.

Another cleanser.

Another serum.

Another product TikTok told us we absolutely couldn't live without.

Meanwhile your poor skin barrier is waving a tiny white flag.

"Could everybody please STOP?"

Sometimes the best thing you can do is simplify.

A gentle cleanser.

Hydration.

Moisture.

Barrier support.

Sun protection.

And perhaps most importantly...

Consistency.

Not twelve new products introduced on Monday night because you're determined to have completely different skin by Friday.

And Here's Something Else to Think About...

There's a difference between sensitive skin and sensitised skin.

Some people naturally have skin that is more reactive.

But sometimes skin becomes sensitised because of what's happening to it.

Over-exfoliating.

Using products that are too harsh.

Introducing too many active ingredients at once.

Environmental changes.

Or simply using products that aren't right for your skin.

That's why the answer isn't always:

"My skin hates skincare."

Sometimes the answer is:

“My skin doesn't like the skincare I'm giving it.”

And that's a very different conversation.

More Isn't Always Better

This is something you'll hear me say again and again in Coffee Chats with Cathy.

You don't need the biggest skincare collection.

You need the right routine for YOUR skin.

And if your skin is feeling sensitive, that routine might actually be beautifully simple.

We can always add things later.

First, let's get your skin feeling comfortable again.

Because skincare shouldn't hurt.

It shouldn't be something you dread.

And it certainly shouldn't leave you afraid to wash your face.

Cathy's Coffee Chat

So if you've been saying...

"I've got sensitive skin. I can't use anything."

I'd like you to change just one word.

Instead of saying:

“I can't use anything.”

Try:

“I haven't found what works for my skin yet.”

That's a completely different way of looking at it.

And maybe that's where our conversation begins.

Tell me what you've tried.

Tell me what happens when you use it.

Tell me what concerns you most.

Tell me how much time you actually want to spend on skincare.

And yes...

Tell me your budget.

Because that's how I believe skincare should begin.

Not with:

"You need to buy this."

But with:

“Tell me about your skin.”

So pop the kettle on.

Bring your questions.

And let's talk.

No pressure.

No judgement.

No bathroom cabinet containing 47 products required.

Just real conversations about real skin.
