Why Has Looking After Your Skin Become So Complicated?
When did choosing a moisturiser become so overwhelming?
Imagine walking into a pharmacy because you need a moisturiser.
Simple enough, right?
Then you reach the skincare aisle.
Hydrating. Brightening. Firming. Repairing. Anti-ageing. Anti-wrinkle. Barrier repair. Collagen boosting. Peptides. Vitamin C. Retinol. Hyaluronic acid. Ceramides. Probiotics. Blue light protection.
Suddenly, a simple purchase doesn't feel very simple at all.
Now imagine you're thirteen and just beginning to think about skincare. Or you're fifty-five and noticing your skin has changed. Perhaps you're a dad trying to find something suitable for your teenage daughter.
Where do you even begin?
Skincare shouldn't feel this confusing
The skincare industry is enormous, and we're constantly being introduced to new ingredients, products, treatments and routines.
One week there's an ingredient everyone apparently needs. The next, there's a new routine trending online.
Social media has only accelerated the cycle.
A short video can introduce thousands of people to an ingredient they've never heard of and, within hours, have them wondering whether they need to add it to their routine.
Then another trend comes along.
And another.
It's hardly surprising that so many people tell me they simply don't know what their skin needs anymore.
The irony is that looking after your skin doesn't have to be complicated.
When skincare marketing creates urgency
There are some wonderful skincare products and incredibly knowledgeable people within the beauty industry. But it's also important to remember that skincare is a business.
And businesses need us to keep buying.
That means we're constantly presented with something new: new ingredients, new formulations, limited editions, exclusive launches and products we're encouraged to buy before we miss out.
Sometimes, the message goes even deeper.
Wrinkles need correcting.
Ageing needs fighting.
Blemishes need hiding.
Every new line or change can begin to feel like another problem we're expected to solve.
But I don't believe healthy skin should begin with fear.
It should begin with understanding.
Your skin isn't something you need to fight
Our skin changes throughout our lives.
It responds to our age, hormones, environment, stress, genetics, health and lifestyle.
That's normal.
A skincare routine shouldn't be about chasing perfection or trying to erase every sign of the life you've lived.
Every freckle, scar and line is part of your story.
That doesn't mean you can't want your skin to look and feel its best. Of course you can.
But there's a big difference between caring for your skin and constantly being made to feel that it needs fixing.
Catherine's Tip 💖
Whenever you see words such as:
Miracle. Instant. Guaranteed.
Pause before you purchase.
Ask yourself what the product is actually promising and whether it makes sense for your skin.
Healthy skin rarely changes overnight.
Good skincare is built on consistency, not urgency.
Start with questions, not products
Imagine if choosing skincare didn't begin with a shelf full of products.
Imagine if it began with a conversation.
How does your skin feel?
What concerns you most?
Has your skin changed recently?
What are you currently using?
What have you tried before?
How much time do you realistically want to spend on skincare?
And importantly, what is your budget?
The answers to those questions tell us far more than the latest trend ever could.
Because skincare isn't about having the most products.
It's about understanding your own skin well enough to make informed choices.
And sometimes, the best thing you can do for your skin is make things simpler.
A little less confusion. A lot more confidence.
After many years working with women and their skin, there's one thing I wish more people knew:
You don't need to know everything about skincare. You simply need to understand what your skin needs.
That's the conversation I'd love us to have more often.
Because looking after your skin should help you feel confident — not confused.
